The Rights of Nature

Nature's rights are a series of legal provisions and principles designed to protect the environment and the various life forms it sustains. These rights acknowledge that ecosystems, species, and natural entities have the intrinsic right to exist, thrive, and evolve. For example, in Ecuador and Bolivia, nature is recognized as a legal entity with specific rights enshrined in their constitutions. This groundbreaking legal recognition allows for nature to be a subject of legal rights, capable of being represented in court and having legal standing. Another instance is the Whanganui River in New Zealand, which has been granted the same legal rights as a human being.
